Respiratory Protection

  3. It is the policy of the University of California, Riverside to establish a safe work environment for employees and inform them of respiratory hazards. When it has been determined that a potential for respiratory hazard exists, each department shall incorporate and implement all applicable components of the Campus Respiratory Protection Program to reduce the risk of respiratory exposure to airborne hazardous materials or substances. Each department is required to comply with all Federal, State, and local respiratory protection regulations.

    1. Authorization for Use
    2. Only those persons who have been designated by the supervisor or his/her designee will utilize respiratory protection equipment.

    3. Respiratory Protection Program
    4. The respiratory protection program establishes the procedures and requirements necessary when implementing respiratory protection within campus departments.

      The Office of Environmental Health and Safety will provide the following services:

      1. Evaluation and monitoring of worksites for potential respiratory hazards
      2. Reviewing and approving of purchases, and issuing respiratory protection equipment
      3. Provide instruction and training in respiratory protection
      4. Conduct all qualitative and quantitative fittesting of respirators
      5. Maintain respiratory records for all employees issued respiratory protection equipment.

      Department Supervisors or their designees are responsible for assuring that all employees under their supervision follow the guidelines of the respiratory protection program.

      All employees will utilize issued respiratory protection equipment in accordance with instruction and training provided by EH&S personnel. This includes maintaining the respirator in a clean and sanitary condition, ensuring that respirators are not modified or altered in any way, using the correct cartridge/filter and changing cartridges/filters when appropriate.
