University employees belong to several retirement plans depending upon their date of hire. Employees hired on or after 4/1/76 belong to the University of California Retirement Plan coordinated with Social Security (UCRP/SS). Other plans still in effect for employees hired prior to the above date are Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) and University of California Retirement Plan (UCRP not coordinated with Social Security). Another plan has been added to the University of California Retirement System called the Pre-tax Defined Contribution Plan (DCP). Either all or part of member contributions that were previously being contributed to UCRP are currently being redirected into the Pre-Tax Defined Contribution Plans.

  1. ELIGIBILITY

Membership in the UCRP/SS begins automatically on the date the employee is appointed to work half-time or more for a year or more. This eligibility requirement can be met on the date of hire or some eligibility requirements of "half-time or more for a year or more." Detailed brochures are sent to eligible staff employees by the Benefits office at the time PA is processed.

  2. UC SAVINGS

Employees are eligible through payroll deduction to contribute to various Savings plans. These plans are the Tax Deferred Plan, After-tax Plan, Benham and U. S. Savings Bonds. Brochures and information can be obtained by calling extension 4766. Forms for enrollment and cancellation are available in the Storehouse.

  3. REFUND OF CONTRIBUTIONS

The money contributed to the basic plan by an employee plus earned interest can be withdrawn when the employee terminates. Under certain conditions, contributions can be left on deposit and drawn as a retirement income when the employee reaches retirement age. Forms for requesting refunds are available in the Storehouse. Additional information can be obtained from the Benefits Office and/or by referring to Accounting Section (200-96).
